Introduction
This all started in 2006. I was discussing large scale models with a friend and happened to mention boats. We were very much of the opinion that the average model boat was just too small to be realistic in the water. It had to be big and heavy. "I wonder what size a 1/48 scale frigate would be?"
(Visit www.theshipyard.co.uk for details of a similar project involving a modified Type 23 frigate.)
I had previously worked in Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd on the Clyde and had worked on Type 21's and type 22's including the stretched batch 2 and 3 variants. Having a bit of 'inside' knowledge, I quickly established that I would build the batch 3, and base it on either HMS Cornwall or Campbeltown.
I had never built a model of this scale and decided to construct the hull from 4 mm ply board, with a balsa and fibreglass skin. Join me on this journey of discovery from the very beginning to the current state of play................
